The Benefits of Living Walls Outdoors

External living walls offer a range of benefits to people, businesses, and the environment:

Environmental and People Benefits

Increased Urban Biodiversity: The healthy plants provided by our living walls create habitats for pollinators and birds, contributing to a greener cityscape and helping you meet biodiversity goals.

Decrease Urban Temperatures: Living walls can reduce the urban temperatures of cities, mitigating the urban heat island effect and making cities more comfortable places to live.

Improved Air Quality: A healthy plant wall improves the air quality of the city and your office, maximising carbon reduction, heat insulation, and soundproofing.

Improves Mental Health: Studies show that being close to plants helps reduce stress in working environments, leading to happier, healthier staff, increased staff well-being and productivity, and improved staff retention.

Reduce Noise Pollution: Green walls can reduce urban noise pollution and are proven to dampen sounds from traffic and crowds by up to 50%!

Business Benefits

Easy installation: We’re experts at installing commercial living wall systems and have been doing it for over 15 years. As long as they’ve been commercially available!

Offers Natural Insulation: External living walls act as natural insulation, helping to keep your property or commercial space cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Attractive Aesthetics: The greenery of a living wall is a modern, and innovative way to create a vibrant and natural environment for employees and a great customer experience.

Eligible for Green Certifications: Contributes to LEED, BREEAM, or other sustainability goals and credits.

Outdoor Living Walls Design Services

We provide complete outdoor living wall design services, working closely with you to create a solution that fits your space, maximises natural conditions, and stays within your budget.

Our team will recommend the most suitable plant varieties for your site, ensuring your plant wall thrives while enhancing biodiversity and visual appeal.

Our Proprietary Living Wall System: Fytotextile

As pioneers of the industry, we have striven to innovate and develop our living wall systems. Driven by this commitment, we worked with Terapia Urbana to develop Fytotextile, a semi-hydroponic, fabric-based system. The key benefits of Fytotextile include:

  • Planted on-site for stronger and healthier plant establishment

  • Lightweight and adaptable to any surface, even narrow structures like lamp posts

  • Easy access to irrigation components for easier, long-term maintenance

  • Supports a wide variety of plants to encourage a healthy biodiversity.

With our in-depth expertise, we can recommend the most cost-effective and best-performing outdoor living wall design that is tailored to your project needs.

Outdoor Living Wall Maintenance Services

We offer living wall maintenance services to keep your green walls in pristine condition, ensuring their long-term health.

Our automated systems and remote monitoring take care of the day-to-day maintenance, minimising disruptions to your business or property. However, even the best vertical gardens require some manual check-ups and the occasional plant to be replaced.

Our bespoke outdoor maintenance packages include:

  • Regular site visits to monitor plant health and performance

  • Remote system monitoring for early issue detection

  • Seasonal pruning and timely plant replacements

  • Routine checks of automated irrigation systems

  • Proactive pest and disease control

  • Balanced fertilisation for strong, healthy growth

  • Clearing blockages to keep systems running smoothly

FAQs

How much does a living wall cost?

The cost of a living wall depends on a wide variety of factors, including:

  • Size
  • Location
  • Plant selection
  • Structural requirements
  • And system complexity

All of these factors make it difficult to give an exact amount, as the prices may vary from the hundreds to the tens of thousands. For more information, you can read our blog on living wall costs here, or get in touch, and we will be able to provide you with a quote tailored to your needs.

Do I need to water the living wall?

No, our living wall systems are all fitted with an in-house developed, proprietary watering system that automates the watering needs of the plants in your vertical garden. So you don’t need to worry about them at all!

This system is programmed to take into account seasonality and the unique natures of the plants, and we can make any adjustments based on the growth as part of our scheduled maintenance checks.

Do living walls create damp?

No, when properly installed by a professional team, your living wall won’t create any damp. For example, our irrigation systems only release the amount of water needed to support the plants they contain and automatically adjust for seasonality.

If you suspect your living wall is creating damp, you should immediately get in touch with your living wall maintenance company or the company that installed it. We can offer advice and remedial action to solve the issue.

What happens to the plants in winter?

During the design process, we will specifically recommend and select plants that are suited to the climate. In colder climates, we will choose especially hardy plants, Our seasonal maintenance will also ensure your wall remains in the best condition.

How long does a living wall last?

A correctly designed living wall with a sensible plant choice that receives regular maintenance will last more than 25 years, subject to the 5 points below.

  • Maintenance – Regular watering, feeding, pruning, and plant replacement extend lifespan.
  • Plant Selection – Choosing the right plants for the location (sun, shade, wind exposure) ensures long-term health.
  • Irrigation System – A well-designed automated system with sensors prevents under or over-watering.
  • Structure & Materials – High-quality backing panels, irrigation, and drainage systems prevent degradation.
  • Climate & Location – Harsh weather conditions may require more frequent maintenance and replacements.

With proper care, a living wall can thrive for decades, making it a sustainable and long-term green solution.

How much maintenance does a living wall need?

While we design all our outdoor living walls to be as self-sufficient as possible, with automated irrigation systems and remote monitoring, keeping them looking their best still requires the occasional maintenance and check-up. This maintenance service includes:

  • Regular site inspections
  • Irrigation and system maintenance
  • Pruning of the plants as they grow
  • Replacing plants that have died
  • Pest management
  • And nutrient balancing to ensure the long-term health of the plants
