What is a Living Wall?

Living walls are an innovative way to introduce sustainable planting to vertical surfaces.

Our patented Fytotextile living wall system was introduced to the UK market in 2010 and has been designed to support long-term plant health. It is lightweight, flexible and can sustain a wide palette of plants, including mature shrubs and trees.

How do you water a living wall?

For interior living walls, you can simply water them yourself with a watering can. Exterior living walls are typically much larger and reach higher, and shouldn’t be watered yourself without specialist equipment.

We have developed a patented irrigation system for our living walls to take care of the watering for you. However, should you choose to water your living wall yourself, we can provide you with a water schedule that will take into account seasonality.

Do living walls create damp?

No, when properly installed by a professional team, your living wall won’t create any damp. If you suspect your living wall is creating damp, you should immediately get in touch with your living wall maintenance company or the company that installed your living wall. We can offer advice and remedial action to solve the issue.

How long does a living wall last?

A correctly designed living wall with a sensible plant choice that receives regular maintenance will last more than 25 years, subject to the 5 points below.

  • Maintenance – Regular watering, feeding, pruning, and plant replacement extend lifespan.
  • Plant Selection – Choosing the right plants for the location (sun, shade, wind exposure) ensures long-term health.
  • Irrigation System – A well-designed automated system with sensors prevents under or over-watering.
  • Structure & Materials – High-quality backing panels, irrigation, and drainage systems prevent degradation.
  • Climate & Location – Harsh weather conditions may require more frequent maintenance and replacements.
