About Our Micro Forests

Micro Forest Horticulture

The design and planting of each of our Micro Forests is unique as they are site specific.

Rewilding is a progressive approach to conservation. It's about letting nature take care of itself, enabling natural processes to repair damaged ecosystems and restore degraded landscapes. Through rewilding, wildlife's natural rhythms create wilder, more biodiverse habitats.

We carry out a ‘Potential Natural Vegetation Survey’ to help us understand which tree species would have been growing in this area before it was impacted by human activities. From this survey we identify the most suitable indigenous trees for the project.

Additionally, a local tree species survey will be carried out within a 20 mile radius from the project site to identify, select and list the native trees most suited to the project site.

The chosen tree species will then be split into four canopy categories – Canopy (high), Tree (Medium), Sub-Tree (low) and shrub (ground Cover) layers to maximize potential forest denseness and growth.

If needed the canopy layer can be removed - if planting next to buildings for example.

The canopy categories are then turned into a planting plan based on the project site and any limitations.

The trees we plant are 30-50cm tall which increases survival rate to over 90%.

Recommendations

We recommend a minimum size of 200m2 with a minimum width of 4.0m in order for the ecosystem to develop.

If planting a hedge, it should not be less than 2.0m wide.
