A Fresh Approach to Creating Vibrant Interior Landscapes with smart planting solutions and Living Walls
At Scotscape we have made it our business to introduce and maintain sustainable landscapes in the built environment. Not only to make your company look good, but to demonstrate your green credentials and to promote biodiversity health and well-being. We install and maintain indoor and outdoor landscapes, and install smart greening solutions including living walls, green roofs and suspended living ceilings.
Using plants in any interior space attracts a range of benefits which go way beyond aesthetics. These include reduced noise levels, air purification, reduction of airborne dust, improved biodiversity and reduction of air temperature in the summer. All of these benefits impact users of buildings at a fundamental level by reducing stress and improving health and performance.
Researcher Craig Knight of the University of Exeter famously said: “There is a fashion for minimalist, monochrome styling (in the workplace) which pleases managers because it gives them a sense of control. But in reality it crushes the human spirit and we can now measure that. Adding plants makes people happier and productive.”
It is encouraging is that the benefits of plants can be proven. As far back at 2014 a study researching the benefits of plants in the workplace which involved academics from the University of Exeter, the University of Groningen in The Netherlands, and the University of Queensland, Australia, looked at two large commercial offices in the UK and The Netherlands. Researchers found that plants significantly increased workplace satisfaction, self-reported levels of focus, and perceived air quality.
“Simply enriching a previously Spartan space with plants served to increase productivity by 15 per cent,” said lead researcher Marlon Nieuwenhuis, from Cardiff University’s School of Psychology.
Smart employers are incorporating plants both in interiors and in outdoor staff recreational areas to bring the health benefits of plants directly to their teams – improving productivity by up to 15%. This makes sound economic sense.
